The forerunner of English Language Education Study Program (ElESP), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FTTE), Mahasaraswati Denpasar University (Unmas Denpasar) is operated based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 091/0/1982 on 8th March 1982. The decree mentions that Mahasaraswati Denpasar University has five registered-status faculties. One of the faculties is the Faculty of Teacher Training that has several departments: Department of History and Anthropology, Department of English Language and Literature, Department of Indonesian Language and Literature, Department of Biology, and Department of Mathematics.

The Department of English Language and Literature turned into English Department with the ‘recognized’ status after the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0793/0/1987 on 12th December 1987. After the enactment of accreditation by the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education (BAN PT), the department which is organized by FTTE Unmas Denpasar receives B accredited status. The latest decree is Number: 021/BAN-PT/Ak-X/S1/VI/2011 that states B accredited status and it has to be renewed on 18th August 2016.

In 2004 English Department which was under the Department of Language and Art, underwent structural changes in the leadership of the department to study program. EESP has undergone several changes of the chairman. The following are the names of the Chairman of the Department of Language and Arts (1989-2004) and the Head of English Language Education Study Program FTTE Unmas Denpasar along with their tenure.

ELESP FTTE Unmas Denpasar has competent, qualified and creative lecturers. The educational qualification of the lecturers has also fulfilled the requirement of being a lecturer. There are doctors, doctorate candidate and magister. The study program is also assisted by some honorarium lecturers from other universities which are at least master and some are doctorate holders.
